Thermostats & Smart Controls
Most thermostats in the Valley are configured wrong — wrong equipment type, wrong cycle rate, wrong auxiliary heat lockout. That costs money every month.
Reliable Air installs and correctly configures smart and programmable thermostats across the Phoenix metro. Proper setup matters more than brand: equipment type, staging, cycles-per-hour, and auxiliary heat lockout all have to match the system, or a smart thermostat will cost more to run than the dial it replaced.
A thermostat is a control system, not an accessory. When it is set to the wrong equipment type — conventional instead of heat pump, single-stage instead of two-stage — it commands the system incorrectly every cycle. We see brand-new smart thermostats running auxiliary electric heat at 55°F outdoors because nobody set the lockout.
Configured properly, a scheduled setback strategy suited to Phoenix rates genuinely reduces bills. The savings come from the schedule and the staging, not from the app.
Thermostat services
- Smart thermostat installation with proper C-wire provisioning
- Equipment type, staging, and cycle rate configuration
- Heat pump auxiliary and emergency heat lockout setup
- Multi-zone and zone damper control integration
- Schedule setup tuned to time-of-use utility plans
- Thermostat calibration and sensor placement correction
Thermostat problems worth a service call
- The displayed temperature does not match what the room feels like
- The system short cycles — turning on and off every few minutes
- A new smart thermostat went in and bills went up
- The screen is blank or the thermostat keeps losing power
- Auxiliary or emergency heat runs when it should not
- The schedule will not hold or resets itself
What working with us looks like
Verify the wiring
Many older Valley homes lack a common wire. We provision one properly rather than using a power-stealing adapter.
Match the equipment
Heat pump versus conventional, stage count, reversing valve orientation — all set to the actual system.
Set the strategy
Cycle rate, differential, and auxiliary lockout tuned for Phoenix conditions and your utility plan.
Show you how to use it
A short walkthrough of the three settings that actually affect your bill.
What it costs
Thermostat installation is generally a flat rate plus the cost of the thermostat. Running a new common wire adds labor depending on accessibility.
Thermostats & Smart Controls questions, answered
What temperature should I set my thermostat in a Phoenix summer?
Most households land between 78°F and 80°F when home and 82°F to 85°F when away. Do not set back more than about four degrees on a very hot day — recovering from a deep setback can run the system continuously for hours and cost more than it saved, particularly with a single-stage unit.
Do smart thermostats really save money?
They save money when they are configured correctly and you actually use the schedule. The savings come from reduced runtime during unoccupied hours and correct staging, not from the app itself. A poorly configured smart thermostat can easily cost more than a basic programmable one.
Why does my thermostat read a different temperature than my room?
Placement is the usual cause — a thermostat on a wall that gets afternoon sun, near a supply register, or above a heat-producing appliance will read wrong. Air leaking through the wire chase behind the thermostat from an unconditioned wall cavity also skews readings and is easy to seal.
